Is there a set rate of horsepower requirements for a cultivator, like say for example 15 horsepower per row or something? I would be using a rear mount cultivator in black iowa sod. Thanks!

I've seen them listed in a text book on designing ag machinery. In my uses of a row crop cultivator, my MF-135 had no trouble pulling a cultivator doing 6 rows narrow. It had trouble lifting it after the transmission oil heated up. I think the cultivator bar had been filled with scrap steel at the factory with the ends welded shut to keep it from floating and it was effective and heavy. And the same tractor pulled a light weight 12' wide field cultivator pretty good. Both were green.

We always used our 7030 or 7045 to pull a 6 row but that was or smalest tractors excep our farmall smta .

I use to cultivate 2 rows with a john deere H. that is rated at 12.5 hp.

We pull a 6 row narrow with a 2-70 white, and it handles it no problem, and has no trouble lifting it.

We ran a two row front mount on a JD B and that was a load...first gear going up hills. We also had a front mount 4 row on the WD45D and that wound give it a workout in 3rd gear. A lot depends on how many and how wide of shovels total and how deep...we had wide rows and 6 shovels per row. I've only seen WD's set up with two row front mount.

The guy I work for has a glenco 12 row that he pulled with a 7000 no problem he had more trouble turning around than he did pulling it he bought it and used one year when he had a herbicide failure

I did a lot of cultivating with a 300 Farmall (30 hp) pushing a 4 row cultivator in my youth. It was a good cultivating tractor (among other things) in it's day. In fact, a good tractor today if you can get along without a cab. Power steering, 3 independent remotes, a TA, big diameter tires, and more than enough power.

If I remember right, I used 4th gear and a reduced engine speed.

Pulling it isn't really a problem, It's how much weight do you need on the front and will the hydraulics lift it? I pulled an 8 row wide brillion with our XT 190 but had trouble lifting it.

I agree, weight may be a problem. You do need enough weight to control the cultivator.
