I'm starting restoration on my CA. The fuel tank is solid but has rust inside, what is the best procedure to clean out a tank?

Some say put nuts + bolts in it and shake it , or duct tape it to another tractor wheel and drive - seems like it may work , if you have a radiator fix it shop around , they can steam it out , then coat it with a liner product , I have done this and it works good

Ditto the nuts-and-bolts, I also throw in pieces of dog chain, nails, ball bearings, and gravel.  Instead of strapping it to a wheel, I've got a 'tumbler' I made out of scrap metal and an old gearmotor... it sits at about a 45-degree angle, and turns about 25rpm.  I push the gas-tank in there against some foam rubber, and put clamps across the opening, and let it spin.  I rinse 'em out with water, dry them fast, and fill 'em with gasoline.

Typically, if the tank is pretty clean, I won't coat the inside, as I've had more 'lined' tanks turn out to be nightmares when the lining comes loose... but a steel tank that's got good gasoline in it will not corrode.  Sediment bowl takes care of anything that shakes loose.

I have used gravel and nuts, but the best results have been with a log chain. I have only tumble by hand which takes awhile but worked ok. Rinsed a couple of times with a small amount of gas and blew out with compressed air and refilled. So far all is working ok. Just watch and clean the sediment bowl often.   I have heard of others using xyol (spelling) to rinse out tanks. This has a high flash point to evaport. Good luck.

I second the chain... it's easiest to get back out, since you don't have to pick/shake out all the pieces.

Had mine from D12 done with acid at the radiator shop, then internally coated by same shop as we found some pin holes after blasting.

I found an cleaner at Canadian tire call vap o rust and it worked on mine fuel tank. it can be dump down the drain as well. thxchuck

I've used battery acid from old batteries. Only takes a few minutes to remove the rust and fuel deposits.

I have used eastwoods gas tank lining stuff before and it works good you clean the rust out then it has you etch the inside of the tank with muratic acid then coat it have never had a problem with it coming back off if you follow the directions .It all depends on how bad the tank is as to weather you need to do that or not.

I cleaned mine out with kerosene and a handful of quarter inch nuts. I jacked up the 4-wheeler and strapped it to the the tire and let it idol for about an hour. I did that a couple of times on and off, it cleaned it right up. I waited until the gas tank was completely dry and then coated the inside with Red-Kote. You can get Red-Kote at O'Reillys Auto Parts.
