Just talked to my uncle about his R40 and his only complaint was when it gets down to the freezing mark it gets hard to start without using ether. It doesn't have any kind of preheater. I don't remember what was used on those. Some kind of manifold heater is my guess but can't remember. Any suggestions? Thanks. Lonn

They get like that with age. I've relocated the ether injector nozzle ahead of the air filter and put it on a button of it's own to give it a shot just before cranking and to maybe hit it again if needed. Located farther from the engine it doesn't knock nearly as bad and we replace the air filter seasonally anyway. Stay away from John Deere (80%) ether and use cheaper stuff to soften the blow.
