Was wondering what sized plow did a D19 usually use in heavier soils. I know some of you guys had 4 bottoms behind WD45's but my dad never had anything more then a 3-16 for his 45 diesel, and nothing around here is sandy or easy plowing by any means. I was thinking of looking for a snap coupler plow that I could use with my D19 or D17 series 4 for plow days. ------------- 1955 WD45 diesel 203322 was my dad's tractor, 1966 D15 23530, 1961 HD3 Crawler 1918, 1966 D17 IV 83495, 1937 WC 41255, 1962 D19 6221 |

Chuck I think our D-19 gas would pull 4-16 plowing up hill in the driveway?. In stubble or stalks we are in the high side of third, what is that 6th? unless we need to slow down for rocks. We went to a late April plow day in Alfalfa sod and ran in high 2nd all day even in that tough going carrying the front end most of the time, LOL. At that same plow day Shermans had thier 19 gas pulling 5 and ran I think in the low side of 3rd. If the plow must be used with both, Id go with a 3-16 fully mounted I think but the 19 wont even know its in the ground. |

| Chuck the reason I say 3-16 is that d-17 4 is little if any more tractor than a properly running 45D IMO, add to that todays harder plowing ground and,,,,. Those mounted 4 bottoms are realy nice for showing off what a traction booser will do. We have a very late 4-16 semimounted with steerable tail wheel and its a load for weight,but it doesnt pop out of the ground in hard spots either. |

I ran a 4 16 fully mounted snap coupler plow behind my 19 gas, and we have some pretty black soil around these parts. It was just some bean ground, but it pulled nice, even had it up in the high side of 3rd gear until I sheared a bolt on one of the shank mounts when I hit a rock...lol. A working traction booster is an immense help in just about any soil conditions, especially if you don't have any weights. ------------- 1930 U 1938 A 1941 WF |

We pulled 4-14 in clay with a D17 diesel, usually second high or low. Unexpected rocks sure do not do favors to anything..specially when trucking in 3rd high.
D19 should be able too pull 4-16 alright...but We have rolled smoke with 190XT on 4-16 in 2nd high.
-- Had a 4-16 behind the 17 diesel and it was lacking both power and weight. Had to be down in low, Then the wheels would spin .
If you have 16.9 on D19, 14" bottoms are alright, but 18.4 squishes the furrow and makes for an uneven look

Actually 4-16's cover 66", and 5-14's cover 70" And since the 16" bottom travels the dirt farther, it naturally pulls a bit harder than the 14" bottom. For all practical purposes the two plows, assuming they are both bright and properly set up should pull nearly the same. The best plowing depth is 1/2 the bottom width, so the 16" will allow you to do a nice job 1" deeper than the 14", if that is an issue. ------------- Most problems can be solved with the proper application of high explosives. |

Chuck I do have a factory conversion that is used to pull a 3pt semi-mounted plow with snap-coupler tractor(D-19, 190). If you would like to see a picture or two send me a pm.

| Chuck my dad bought a D19 and it came with 5X16 snap coupler plow. I did not see him use it ,was gone to service. I know my younger brother used it and liked it. Not so heavy soils on the farm dad lived on. When the D19 motor went out, he bought a 190xt and purchased a 4X16 3 point plow to use with it. The 5x16 plow went to a fellow in Minn last fall, still have the 3 point, need to sell it for mon. |

We used a 4-16 fully mounted plow with tailwheel on our D19 gasburner. It did real good in stubble or stalk ground, not so good in alfalfa ground, especially going up hill, used to wear out the left brake every year plowing. Now the D17 would pull 3-16s anywhere, anytime, anygear, it was a much better match. Our D19 had fluid in the rear tires and a stack of front weights, on level or rolling ground it was ok on the plow, we have some fairly steep hills here. It didnt help cause the D19 and the D17 plowed in the same field, the D17 never got below third low, the poor ole D19 was in second low up the hills. I will say the D19 made a much better feed wagon tractor than the D17, we feed a lot of cattle all year long in those days, sad to say there isnt a hoof to be found now. When the 190XT diesel came along, that changed everything!!!! |
