Just a quick question...
When installing the new gasket set for the oil pan on a WD.. Whats the normal length you guys leave the thick gasket on both ends (front and rear mains) above the height of the side gaskets? About a 1/4" or 1/8"? What do I need to do to make sure I got a good tight seal around the mains?
Thanks!

Don't cut anything off or you will have a leak. Others will post soon and they will tell you not to cut them off.

What a timely question! With a little luck, I too will be installing a pan gasket soon. I am glad I read this, I might have done some trimming that I would have regretted later.
I sure do like this website, and I sure appreciate the knowledge that is shared here!

Don, Please don't cut them off, the guys are spot on about this!! Get a old soup can and clean it up then roll the end gaskets inside the soup can and leave them there for two or three days, the end gaskets will fit the pan and retain there shape from the can, use the little clips to hold the ends in place and don't use a lot of sealer on them.
hope this helps. Here's the can I use.

Some kits come with small clips to hold the front and rear gasket during installation. The A.C part number is 70229177 and when I did mine last summer it was a big help. Don and other members are right on about the can trick for getting those gaskets to work.
Danny
P.S. I agree don't cut anything.

Bill, I know this forum is 8 years old now but are the Napa gaskets as good as agco or elsewhere? I’m doing the pan gasket on my wd45 now.

If still available, Felpro's are always good gaskets.

Will the NAPA Felpro kit work on a wd45 too?

It appears FelPro makes a 1-piece neoprene gasket for a WD.
Does anyone know anything about this item?

Go to the farm equipment-knowledge base forum. There is an excellent post on exactly how to do it!

Put one in a big block Chevy three or four years ago. So far so good. I did this in chassis so a four piece set would have been a nightmare. No experience with the WD set.

Update. I fixed a leaking oil pan on my WD without a gasket. I used Right Stuff from Permatex.
I went to a engine machine shop and told them what I was doing, and they suggested Right Stuff.
It’s very heavy bodied and you need to work quick. I let it set up overnight and I’ve run in an hour so far with no drips. (And I wasn’t chasing 4 pieces of cork around)
Just a heads up, it makes life easy
