4th gear flys out on your 190XT III. The splines on the 4th gear ( which is one with the input shaft) don't look to healthy and I imagine the shifting coupling isn't to good either. What I am trying to figure out is...can I just split the tractor in the middle, without having to take the rest of the tranny apart, and also take that coupling out once the input shaft is out to replace it. Or will the countershaft gear be in the way not letting me get it out....which would require the entire tranny to be taking out. Any info would be appreciated.

I'm thinking you'll have to drop the c-shaft down to get all the stack off the mainshaft.Ya know they're all basically the same from WD45-220,just incresed sizes.Been through both 45&220 but too long ago.

Sorry Austin, 4th gear will come out with just a split, in order to get the coupler out the main shaft has to move to the rear of the tractor, wheels, axles, bull gears, brakes, ring gear and housing all gotta come out.

This is what a fourth gear teardown looks like.

It might just be that front bearing for the input shaft...that is number 1 on my things to look at.

190XT transmission rebuild. When we worked in the service dept. at the Des Moines branch, Joe Dullard and I put on service schools on the 190XT power train in 1966 and 1967. We would get 2-4 dealer's mechanics together at one dealership and we would basically replace everything but the castings from the torque tube back. We did 19 of these schools. The fix that we installed was supposed to be the final time that they would ever have to come apart. It stopped the bleeding, but there were still some problems after that. The flat rate was supposed to be 28 manhours, but none of the dealerships could even get close to that. We would give them all the hours credit that Milwaukee would let us get away with. Anybody know where Joe Dullard is and what he is doing now?

Worn shift fork on 4th gear also contributes to the problem. My XT is almost back together from getting this problem. New input shaft, bearings, shift fork = plenty of cash, but should be good for a long time now.

We put a new fork in because the other was really wore...now it flys out even more frequent. I will have to check the play in that front input shaft.

you may be able to modifly the shift detents on the shift rail to improve the gear jumping. Also on a lot of those tractors the counter shaft can jump up and touch the coupler while 4th gear and knock it back to neutral. also the snap ring on the mainshaft may need to be a little thicker to keep the gears from moveing on the shaft. Hey Dean, I thought I remembered seeing an old service bulletin about using "torque lock" gear sets as replacements parts for older tractors. Could that have been true and I wonder why didn't Allis ever come out with these better gears as repair kits for earlier tractors if it's not true?
