Here's a few pictures I came across of my Grandpa's retirement farm sale from nearly thirty years ago November 1981. My Grandpa farmed roughly 225 acres at the end and his biggest tractor was a A-C 185. He used that tractor for nearly everything on the farm, pulled a 13 1/2 foot disc, four bottom plow, all four row equipment, small square baled, ground feed and hauled manure. Grandpa had a little bit of all brands, but mostly A-C. Most of the A-C equipment stayed in the family, some ended up with the neighbors and is still in the area. I was five years old at the time and the only thing I really remember from the sale is Dad driving up the lane with the D-17 and making a right turn with that, and my cousin Nick going up the lane with the 185 and making a left trun with that both tractors heading to their new homes which they still are at thirty years later.

 Grandpa's D-17 after a quick coat of paint. 25 years later I would be sanding off those multipule laryers of paint for restoration.
      My cousin Nick did the bidding on the 185 and got to drive it home also.
Grandpa passed away in 2002, nearly ten years ago already but like I said his two main tractors are still in the family and have been restored after all the years of use.
 The D-17 purchased new by Grandpa in spring of 1964 and restored by my Dad and myself in 2006, total hours on tractor unknown, had 8300 on the tach at the farm sale and the tach quit working shortly after that and was run for another 10 years without. Just a parade and show tractor today.
 Grandpa and Grandma in front of the 185 after complete rear end and engine overhaul and new paint in 1994. The 185 was purchased new by Grandpa in March of 1972. Tractor has nearly 7000 hours on tach and is still used at my Uncle Davids farm for round baling.

Great Pics you have to have more old pics then I have ever seen of your familys farm. You are really lucky to have them. By the way did you get the storm you was suppose to get? Tell NTY RTY I said hello. I have told everyone I have seen about going to his place. Cant weight to get back out there and see all his toys...LOL. Did Andy tell you that his son taught my nephew at College last semester in ILL. Small world.

| Interesting - thanks for sharing. Glad ya have a couple of his tractors -- they look sharp. The picture of all the cars lined up along the drive, looks just like farm sales today --- just different model vehicles. |

Those are great pics. Brings back a lot of memories for me too. My Great Grandpa farmed near Eagle, Nebraska and I remember going back for his farm sale in 1978. Those family farm sales always make me sad though, if the equipment goes to people you don't know. I'm glad you were able to keep those tractors. How's your 190 rebuild going? Best, Troy
P.S. Do all Nebraska farmsteads have a long lane like your Grandpa's? My Grandpa's looked identical to that one......

Matt - great story and great pics...again I have no pics our farm, Allis's or my Dad on the farm while I was growing up...camera only came out at Christmas & a few vacations. Thanks for sharing! Mike

Great photos and stories! Thanks for sharing. It looked like a good family farm auction. Every family member, if interested, gets an equal chance to bid on every item. Can't get any fairer than that considering that any special items are offered to family before the auction. Its also good to see the local community show up to support a family farm auction - some buy equipment, most buy food, but everyone gets to visit. |
