Puting a 45 diesel engine together and am cunfused. I know how the rods came out, but the I&T book says that the numbers on the rods should be away from the cam. The numbers for the cylinders were toward the cam. there are numbers  on the away side of the cam but they are like, 33 and 22 and 42. What do these numbers mean?   Don

I am going to guess they are punched numbers.  If one punch is on the rod and the other on the cap, I'm guessing that it is to keep the rods and caps matched, and let you know they are from the corresponding cylinder.  More than likely has been apart in the past and the punches made sure everything went back where it came from.  It all looks the same spread out on a bench....

These are stamped numbers that I am refering to. I did punch mark them when I took them out. I think somebody put used ones in at sometime or another. So I am wondering if they were in right the last time. Don
