I have a 1997 Chevy W/T 1500 that has the Vortec V6 engine and the 5 speed standard shift transmission and I have a problem. When you are driving it you have to let the clutch nearly completely out before it will catch. It started out that you had to let it out pretty far before it would catch but now its got farther and farther. It has the hydraulic clutch so their is no way of adjusting it. From what I've found elsewhere I will have to change some of the parts in the clutch to fix this but I don't know which ones. Do any of you guys know what could be causing this??? I like for the clutch on my standard shift trucks to catch close to the floor so this one having to be all the way out is killing me.

The clutch itself may be worn and in need of replacement. If that is the case, replace the pressure plate and resurface the flywheel also.

your clutch fluid resivor (how ever ya spell it) needs replaced and the lines blown out. the fluid gets real thick and won't work right! had to do that twice on my '97 GMC with the 5-speed. have them check the clutch as hubert says, and also the slave cylinder!

might be the tranny too! or the shift fork in the tranny! just had that done on my '97. new tranny, new clutch, new pressure plate, flywheel resurf, new slave cyl. , (full service as it's to cold for this fat dude to crawl under now) $4856.00. whew!

i would say its in your clutch its self. there is nothing in the trans that would make the clutch pedal change engage positions. i would say your pressure plate springs have gotten weak. another thing you can try to see if your clutch is getting weak is get the truck rolling in 1st gear speed up to where you would normally shift. then instead of shifting to second gear go to 4th and let the clutch out. it should just about kill the pickup if the clutch is any good

Sounds like you're about due for a new clutch. As the clutch disc wears and ges thinner, the release fingers on the pressure plate move closer to the release bearing. The closer to the release bearing the smaller amount of pedal movement is needed.
