Subject: Sandable primer question

Working on a gas tank and hood for AC with a lot of rust pitting.  After removing the paint sanding/grinding, the pitting is still too much to leave as is and paint.

Any suggestions for a good sandable primer to fill in some of this pitting?  I'm using Dupont epoxy primer on the rest of the tractor-do I need to put this epoxy on first or should the sandable stuff be on bare metal?

I also thought of using a thin layer of body filler and then sand down to fill in these pits?

Any suggestions appreciated.

Thanks

Body filler or glazing putty will save you alot of time and troublt over painting and sanding to get rid of those pits.

just my opinion,

sandable primer does not stick well to bare metal, use your epoxy then fill with primer or a glazing putty, depending how bad the pits are ,try 4 good coats then sand to see if you burn through to metal before pits are gone if u do use the putty

I have been using an epoxy high build primer made by Acme and I really like it. I have been doing bodywork either full or part time for 40 years and the materials have really come a long way. This primer is a self etching primer so you can put it directly on bare metal. Only a few years ago you had to use a self etching bonding primer and then put the high build on top of that. If you want the part #  I can put it on here or PM me.JP
