I am thinking of tackling this job in our farm shop. I have a service manual but am wondering if there are any pointers from anyone that has done the job. This is a FWA/ powershift model. The manual gives two methods. One appears to be removing the adapter plate and one does not. Which is best? I really don't want to try this and get it back together and have it still leak.

I would remove the adaptor plate because there are a couple big o-rings back there that can get hard and start leaking. Easy to do once you are that far into it. Maybe time for a torque limiter while your there?

The adaptor plate is only a few more bolts once you have the tractor split. Just make sure you have the engine secured in the rear by something besides the plate, like an overhead hoist. I didn't change the o-rings when I did my 7000's rear seal the first time, and it kept leaking after that. Also, change the wear sleeve on the flywheel (if the 426 has one).
