I now have three diesels, the HD3, my wd45 diesel, and my 02 Ford 7.3 powerstroke. I know there should be an additive in the antifreeze to prevent cavitation, and/or the coolant should come with the right additive. Was wondering if there was a common antifreeze that I can get that will work in all three and what you guys do to keep up with checking the coolant etc. I would like to change out the antifreeze in my powerstroke and I have to get some for my HD3 so I can fill it up after I got all the coolant hoses changed out. Is there any good websites that have information on this? Thanks.

CAT ELC Coolant has no silicates that cause cavitation.....I think Prestone Heavy Duty or something like that is the same.

Some of the truck sites might have a answer also on what they use. Try heavy truck repair site (shop) near you and ask them . Doubt if you will find the rightthing at a big box store.

I used a additive Nal-Cool to the anti-freeze I have. Friend was rep for company and gave me a case of it to try.

careful with that 7.3. If it is worked hard and the coolent not kept up the termites will get the cylinder walls.

Ford parts markets and addative for the 7.3 and the strips to test the colant.

I think if you google ELC you will get a gad zoop of stuff to read.

another thought is to check on DieselStop. I read all about it there.

I got a jar full of test strips at NAPA. They will tell you the status of your antifreeze. Changing the antifreeze is also a good idea.

I used to have a Ford with the 6.9 diesel. Cummins had Fleetguard coolants that are low silicates that don't require the additive and can be used in the other equipments as well. I believe that Fleetguard products can be bought at International truck dealers.

I don't see why you couldn't fill everything with VC7, Fords Premium Gold, which is what your 7.3 had in it when new. The 6.0 uses it too. If I remember correctly (I always have to look to be sure) when you test with the strips, a reading over 800 is good, 350 to 800 can be rejuvinated with a bottle of VC8, below 350 you flush with iron out and refill with new.

Def do not use Fords Premium Gold ELC....that is the cause of alot of the problems in 6.0 Fords...it is loaded with silicates which fallout and cause cavitation....the silicates plug the oil cooler which starves the EGR cooler for coolant cause it to flash boil and pressurize coolant going into the intake/cylinders which toasts the heads....thats the first thing I did to my 6.0 is flush the ELC, change out to CAT EC-1 rated ELC and EGR Cooler/EGR delete my truck....works perfect....if you really want info on Ford Diesels go to www.powerstroke.org ....its a page of Powerstroke info with guys as dedicated to them as we all are to AC's.....its worth checking out.
