I have question for the experts!

I have just completely rebuilt a 1953 CA including the carb. The tractor runs great at idle and full throttle, but the problem is that once you start to put a load on the motor it sputters badly. I have played with the timing and it's right on the money as far as the timing marks.

I am wondering if the float in the carb is set to low becauce when it starts to sputter under load if you pull the choke out it clears up.

Am I thinking in the right direction or is there possibly another problem?

Governor problems/mis adjustment. Bad plug/plugs/plug wires, Bad coil, bad condenser, poor points, bad ground, clogged fuel line/fuel strainer, leaf/crap floating in the tank blocking the fuel outlet, partially plugged main jet, in addition to mis adjusted float.

I know the electrical problems don't sound right but you would be suprised how common they were. If it sputters instantly the moment you put it under load, start checking electrical stuff. If its delayed 15 seconds or more, start checking from the tank down.

Also just because it was parts are new or rebuilt doen't mean they are not defective.

I have replaced all the parts you have mentioned, the only thing I haven't done yet is completely rebuild the mag. I has good spark but there are a couple of things I could check there. I hear what you are saying though about the new parts being possibly defective.

I'll just keep workin on it!

Open the main mixture to run a little richer.

Gerald, a CA has a fixed jet unless its been modified, so no adjustment is possible except on Idle

Put more fuel in tank . Not enough pressure to feed jet espicesly going up hill.

If you think the carb is good and you have good flow of fuel to it, beings it clears up with a little choke, I would check for vacuum leaks with a can of WD40 or carb cleaner. That's pretty easy to do without tearing anything apart and won't cost much but a couple minutes of your time. That main jet can be replaced with a variable one too.

If the main jet isn't adjustable then the float level affects the mix. More gasoline in the bowl, it runs richer. Or if flow is restricted by varnish in the plumbing or dirt and the most hidden piece, often there's a screen on the carburetor inlet adapter that I've seen plugged tight.

When you rebuilt the carb, did you use compressed air to blow the passages clear? Did you soak it in carb cleaner or just do the spray can thing? Since you say it straightens up with some choke, I'd look for a vacuum leak with some carb spray around all joints first.

I saw this exact same thing at Hutch a few years ago. The guy just overhauled the motor and put the tractor together so we could use it in the field demos. He set a WD cap on the air cleaner, the cap was too big and it would suffocate the engine when it needed more power. Try unhooking the air cleaner, it could have an obstruction of some kind. Also, try it with the gas cap off also, could be a vapor lock.

try another carb for checking operation[borrow the neihbors] bet you willl find it in carburetion plugged jets or passages
