My D14 is running a 12 volt battery with negative ground. Actually starts pretty good compared to my 6 Volt B. I am pretty sure D14s started life with a positive ground.
I am sure this has been asked before but I don't remember the answer. Does the starter and generator care about the direction? ...something about them getting polarized once they are installed sticks in my mind.

The generator HAS to be polarized before starting or it can fry the voltage regulator. The coil and ammeter connections need to be adjusted so they match the battery. The starter doesn't care. The positive terminal on the coil needs to match the positive terminal on the battery. E.g. for negative ground the positive terminal on the coil should go to the ignition switch with the negative terminal to the ignition points.
You can check the ammeter easily. Turn on a light. It should deflect left. Start the tractor and run it fairly fast, the ammeter should deflect to the right if its connected right AND the generator is charging. If the coil is right and the ammeter passes these two tests its all OK.
