What weight of oil should I use for my HD11 engine in the winter?

Depending on your location and how cold it gets. If you have heaters on it or just setting out. I use Rotella 15/40 in just about all equipment year round.

An article recently published in the "Equipment Today" magazine (October, page 28) talked about diesel oils in cold temperatures. They state that 10W30 oils will lower starting temperatures 15-20 degree F vs 15W40. I use 15W40 in the crawlers, Bobcat, etc., however thick lubricants do not work well with piston engines in the winter time. Learned that from operating Pratt & Whittney radial engines in the winter. Cold, thick oil is a killer for any engine in the cold.

I used 15-40 Mobil Delvac in my Powerstroke and 4150 Kubota for a couple of years and after asking my jobber about lighter oil , he said yea, we can get Delvac 10-30, so thats what I use year round. Makes a tremendous differance in cold weather starting, if I towed heavy loads in 100 degree heat I'd use 15-40 but I see no temps like that here. Maybe in Tejas.
