| I bought a series IV D17 in August. The amp meter was nonfunctioning. I installed a new one and the needle whips back and forth at high speed. Is this likely to be the generator? or the control unit or? |

How do you know the ammeter wasn't working? Were you having to charge the battery? Did it show discharge with the headlights on and engine off? | Poor sticky contacts in regulator could cause the whipping action. Disconnect battery, then Take cover off regulator. Be careful in keeping things clean. take a point file or sand paper and clean the contacts. then run a clean sheet of paper through to remove any crud left behind by sand paper and then see if that helped. |
