I went and looked at a wd I might buy, but would like to know what the bee hive looking thing on the draw bar is. Is it a traction booster? my other wd dose not have it. it that is what it is would some one be kind enough to explane how it works? thanks

Thats a snap coupler. Your other tractor must be a pin hitch. Hook up to implements designed to fit it and provides a weight transfer when it pulls hard to get you through a tough spot.

Sounds kinda like the spring used for "shock" when plowing.Dad's WD had a big spiral wound spring down there.He said it was for the plow.Replaced all that when switched to snap coupler system.I bet it's still around here somewhere.

I've seen only one WD with the "beehive" spring and that was years ago. As I recall the coils were flat rather than round.

It is not shown in any of the WD/WD-45 service or repair manuals.

Like Steve says, I think it was used with the plows. Seems like I read somewhere that it might have been part of the package that came with the plows themselves.

However, I have the manual for the WD-52 and WD-53 2 and 3 bottom plows and no mention is made of it in there.

Flash!! I just looked in the "Bible" (Norm Swinford's book) and on page 216 there are two references to the "flat-coil spring", one alongside of the picture of a WD and the early WD pickup plow also known as the round beam plow. The spring was used to lessen the chances of springing the frame, a problem that the later square beam plows didn't have due to their shear bolt construction.

Both the spring and snap coupler hitches were options on at least some Wds. My 1949 had the spring hitch with the pin attached draw bar. I switched it over to snap coupler so have both hitch and draw bar types.

If I remember correctly, there was also an attachment that went to the hand clutch and released the hand clutch in case a large object was hit. I never had cause for one to release the clutch or the spring but I do believe they were available.

thanks for the replys guys, I beleve it is a spring of some sort. Ill find out in the spring when I hook the plow up thanks again

I have a manual for the "WD" pickup plow. The beehive spring set up is pictured and instructions on how it is installed.

According to Norms book, " In 1954 with Serial number 151381, the Snap-Coupler was made standard equipment on the WD45. Older WD and CA tractors could be converted.....
So if it was made standard equipment in 54 were there any optional equipment SC tractors sold prior to this? I have never heard of a WD coming from the factory with SC hitch.
