Grew up on a WD, but never had to do any brake work on it.  Well, I guess the time of blissful ignorance is over, and I will have to deal with that anchor pin.  My question is: does the pin need to come out before the axle housing can come off?  Probably a dumb question, I never had noticed the pin under there before, along with the retainer, till the other night.  Any answers appreciated, thanks.

Yes, it does because you have to pull out the brake linings out from the top before you remove the axle. Have fun I just did the brakes on my D17  the last couple of nights. The drums had 1/8" grooves in them. It was fun getting them off!

The pin has to come out and then you can take the brake rod and screw it out and once you take the nut off for your adjustment you can pull the brake shoes out the top. You may have to play with it for a while but they will come out. You don't have to take the housing off unless your going to change a brake drum.
