I am wondering if you have to take the cab off a 2004 or a 2006 Ford 150 Pickup to replace the motor - I have located several pickups with good bodies and transmissions that need motors. I know a mechanic told me the motors set far enough back in a Ford that he would not consider doing any work on a Ford. My 2006 Dodge had the engine replaced by him with a used motor about 130,000 back, it now has 330,000 on the body, the motor is using oil, the truck is basically shot as the bed rusted long ago. But it still has the original transmission which is even hard for the mentioned mechanic to believe, he has put transmissions in a Dodge at less than 100,000 before

you dont have to take the cab off.. It can be done with the cab on.. but as you said, you spend a lot of time standing on your head and setting on top of the engine....... not a game for an OLD GUY.

If is as my Super Duty was, this was ONLY way to change Turbocharger. Core Support panel and Internal Fender system does not come off.

2006 should have the 5.4 V8... or slightly smaller 4.6 V8... those were the most common.. Newer can be turbo V6 , or diesel..
2004- 2006 with a "bad motor" is probably the 5.4 with Variable Cam Timing that was not well maintained with oil changes..... VCT chain / tensioners / sprockets / solenoids can all get damaged .

Good luck as to finding those used and functional, most will not even core out for exchange engines. Those are 20yo machines and junk when new.

i would have a 5.4 with VCT rebuilt with NEW DESIGN parts or After Market parts on the valve / control / oil pump - system... I sure would NOT buy an engine with 150Kk miles from the junk yard and install it, hoping for LONG LIFE..
i had a 2002 and a 2003 both with the 5.4 motor BEFORE they put the VCT system on them and i ran them both 250K miles and still running when sold..

Darwin... remember the truck that LARS bought.. Had the VCT problem, but INTERNAL engine was good... just needed the front end replaced ( chains, gears, tensioners , solenoids..) Saves a lot if your not pulling the motor and complete rebuild..... but you got to find the RIGHT truck that needs just VCT done.

Went to visit a friend awhile back, he runs a small auto repair business. He had one of those big Ford Expeditions in there with the body suspended above the chassis to R&R the fuel injectors.
He said it wasn't nearly as difficult to pull the body as it seems, and nearly impossible to change the injectors with the body in place.

I remember way back saying cars are getting to the point lift the hood remove the radiator cap and drive something new in and reuse the cap . About to that point now - remember also to replace back spark plugs in some vehicles to cut inner fender well to get to plug that was hidden by heater box or doing a 7 cylinder plug change

50 years ago i had a 1969 C20 Chubby with a 250 straight 6 and wide ratio 4 speed.. I had a 4 step ladder to climb up, jump over the radiator, set on the fender well and put your feet on the main frame...to get close to change the spark plugs !!

Steve, that's exactly what I did with my '82 Ford F100's 300 six...

Looked under the hood of several recent pickups bought by friends, would NOT BUY ANY OF THEM. No Room, all those bells and whistles fail during first three years owned, dealers and manufacturers DEPEND of return buyers so build where CANNOT work on them.
May only have 10-15 years functional living where older brother and I spoke of this where he is at currently. At current point he is Buying a replacement every two to three years, rolling over what has to where does nothing but routine maintenance at the dealer for a Reduced Expense. His wife is Leasing and turns in regularly as to replacing before lease is up on Buyouts, Average is three years. He has not even had to buy Tires before traded out. Fully understand I will be there at some not so distant point.

You guys get gubmit to mandate everything on a vehicle and put a stop to complicated fixes, even things not working. Ever notice how safety and hazard warnings never fail? Think back to the last time a seat belt buzzer, latch or anchor or light didn't work. Airbags, 4 way flashers? Or if they did need to be fixed, you needed limb amputations to do it. YesireeBob, no probs with that stuff, just anything and everything else that ain't mandated. Car company's know how to build cars, they just don't. But they do make spiffy and functional cupholders, and lots of them.

Dmiller, you certainly do NOT need to pull the cab on a 7.3 to change the turbo or even pull the heads.

Yep, pulled the turbo on my 97, was no fun though for a couple bolts.
