Now.... if I wanted to pick up my new to me crawler, I dont think the left coast would let my 97 diesel pick up cross the border?

YEP!!!

General rule

If your diesel pickup has a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) over 14,000 lbs, it must have a 2010 or newer model year engine to legally operate in California.
This rule applies to any diesel vehicles operating in the state, including those registered out-of-state.
