hey guys, new to the forum here. I have a d17 gas and was wondering if a d17 diesel input shaft can be swapped into it. It seems to be the better option for swapping a 301 diesel in it so I don’t have to make a spacer in between the bell housing and adapter because the gas shaft is too long by 1” and 1/4 give or take. Or I could have the input shaft turned was another thought.

Gas and diesel clutch shafts can be swapped, unless it is a series 4. Then, you have other issues. Be sure to get the diesel throw out brg shifter parts too as they are shorter than a gasser.  When I did a 433-TI combine engine swap into a D-17 gasser, I cut the nose off the clutch shaft, and found a new pilot bearing that would slide on the splines that were left. Flywheel (12 inch clutch) pocket had to be made to fit the new pilot bearing. I also (memory) moved the flywheel forward some on the crankshaft and deepened the clutch friction surface too. This allowed me to stay with the long gas clutch shaft. I feel I had less labor involved that way and had a 100 HP clutch/flywheel inside the bellhousing.  There's a thread from 4 or 5 years ago D-17 XT I think it was called with lots of pics.

I will have to check out that post. So with that being said about series 4 being an issue mines a series 4 haha. What issues are there? I already bought the 190xt adapter plate a clutch and flywheel aswell. I bolted everything up and it seems that everything lines up correctly but the gap is a 1” 1/4 because the shaft is too long being the only big issue I can see which messes with the throw out bearing gap of course. I have a lathe and was thinking about cutting it and turning a new end for the pilot.

The series 4 gas clutch shaft has shorter length splines for the clutch disc. All the older D-17's have splines that go rearward another 1 1/2" or so. How are you dealing with the hollow shaft to drive the hydraulic pump?? The length relationship between those two shafts has to be pretty close to original to work. A series 4 diesel hollow shaft must be shorter than a gasser, as they are two different p/n's.    What are you doing for a pressure plate to drive the hollow shaft ??

The pressure plate is off the 190 as well. It has the holes to put the drive for the hollow shaft on it with new rivets or bolts with lock tite. I plan to drill the rivets holding the drive to the original to put it on the new one. That was where I was figuring to cut the input shaft to allow for proper engagement onto the hollow shaft and also the throw out bearing.

That's what it would take. A series 4 diesel clutch shaft and a shorter hollow shaft along with diesel throwout brg parts.
