Can someone with experience rebuilding a hydraulic pump on a CA tell me what tools are needed for the job? I don't want to start taking it off and tearing it apart if there will be any specialized tools needed that I wouldn't have. Better to know before I start. Also any tips before I start from those that have done the job before. Thanks

I redid the pump on a CA a number of years ago and if it would have taken any special tools, I would not have had them. I remember that I got most of the parts off a hyd. pump that was on a junked WD that my father-in-law had. Same pump, locatedunder the belly on the WD and on the back of the CA. Another thing that I remember is that the ball bearings in both pumps were bad and I priced them at the local Agco-Allis. I thought that they were extremely high so I took one of the old ones to Bearing Service in Evansville, IN and they sold me a 1 Doz-box of the same size for less than 1/2 of what Agco wanted for each.

jim just be clean with everything and lay the parts out in order. shop manual or picture also helps. I replaced all the springs in mine, if any of the spools are scored, rusted or sticking you can polish them with super fine paper. one thing to check is the proper gasket in place betwen the pto housing and the tractor. The gasket extends from the bottom up to create a dam and resevoir of oil for the pump pickup tube, so many of these are missing. should be able to look in after pump is out to check it. good luck

A good parts cleaner. its all just common wrenches and a magnet to lift the balls out. When you tunr it upside down to get them out your going to the store for a new one.

CLEAN off your workbench first ! Get LOTS of good lighting !! Clean/sweep ALL of your garage floor!!!

Add a 'rail' around the outside of the bench, unless you want to spend an hour looking for one of the balls that WILL roll away on you....lol..well mine did.

No special tools, just take lots of pictures or have the book and remember that cleanliness is very,very important.Can't stress that tip enough !

Also important to clean the 'cavaties' to get ALL the crud out.When you think you're done cleaning everything and ready to reassemble...please..clean it all again for me.

Ok, it took me 3 times to get my CA pump 'right'...

Jim, When we went to factory school for the Hyd pumps they insisted that the interior parts be placed in clean diesel fuel. That provided lubrication and kept the parts from expanding - they have such close tolerances(?). We used to do them in the field withoug problem just normal tools. There was a cone that allowed one to roll the o-rings up on their seat without twisiting them.

As said above just be careful and clean.

I've done 2 of them. Both successful. No special tolls just patience. I tapped a new piece of card board to my bench that covered it all. Things don't roll araound as easily plus I could make notes and lay it all out just as it came apart. Then I took pics of it all. Somewhere I still have the pics for future reference.
