I have a D15 II that is not charging I think. It has the generator and voltage regulator setup. What do I check it, how do I check it. Thanks, Tracy ------------- No greater gift than healthy grandkids! |

Ground the "F" wire on the Generator and see if it starts charging. Momentarily touch "FLASH" the "A" wire on the Generator to the battery NEGATIVE terminal and see if it starts charging.. ( assume your are positive ground ?) both of these tests to see if the REGULATOR is the problem.. You can also take a volt meter and put across the two generator terminals while running and see what the voltage is... to test the Generator..

Check to see if your brushes are freely moving inside the generator. I believe you can do this without removing the generator. Just an idea as I had a electric alternator/starter guy show me this. The first step in troubleshooting is to verify if it is indeed charging or not. What are the symptoms? Does the ammeter show any movement at all in either direction with the tractor running? With the engine revved up, try putting a voltmeter directly on the battery terminals (NOT on the cable connections). A 6 Volt system should show at least 6.8 Volts or more, 12 Volt system should be above 13. Next, check the voltage right at the Armature terminal on the generator; if that voltage is low, then proceed with the steps outlined by Steve. |

Remember, just because a Generator "motors" doesn't mean it'll charge. The best way to test the unit is take it to a rebuilder and have him load test the unit. If the unit load tests out okay, clean and check the ground on the Voltage Regulator. If it still isn't charging, remove the VR cover and give the contacts a spritz of Brakekleen or TV tuner cleaner and then try it. | You can get a 1 wire alternator and alternator bracket made for a D15 for about $150 total off ebay and end the charging drama.Put that set up on mine about 2 years ago love it. |
