When the PTO is engaged there is noise from that area. How can you tell if it's the PTO assembly or the hydraulic pump that needs work?

If you hear a tapping as it is engaged it is probably a stuck valve in they Hyd pump.
If it is a more steady grinding type of noise then you have to look for bearings.
If the belt pulley is attached you may want to check to see if it is loose.
You can drain the oil from the pto - plug on the bottom - pull the pump to see if it is there.
Good Luck!

There are 4 plungers that have roller followers to pump the oil. They use springs to push the plungers out to draw oil in. I had kind of a tap noise that had no real rythm to it that turned out to be a broken return spring under a plunger. Replaced the springs, problem solved. Easy simple repair.
