I believe that is a Suzuki Samarai sitting there in the driveway; a few years ago, those things were prevalent around here with about 50% of the driving public owning one; they would convoy on weekends to various offroad trail places, as many as thirty or forty of them together --- all in Suzuki Samarais; now, they are as rare as hens teeth. |

This barn sits close against the highway.
In it's day, this barn was always black as a Crow's wing with those bright white doors.
Prior to the 1973 opening of The Cumberland Parkway, two miles South of here, this was THE way to travel.
I can remember as a child there being big motel advertisement signs on both ends of this landmark barn; the sign on the West end advertising a motel in Somerset and the East end a motel in Russell County, Dreamland, if I remember correctly.
If you look close, you can just make out where it said something on the long side of the barn facing the road.
 37.129860°N  84.872146°W  353.568 m  1,160'
The first three photos are taken from the East side looking West; the fourth photo, dated Wednesday_03-November-2021, is taken through the filthy glass of a fast-moving pickup from the West side looking East.
   - --- -
In that fourth photo, you can see a TV antenna; there is a stretch through this area where you can get excellent analog TV reception; there is even an "antenna guy" working from his home out in the country who sells, installs, and services the antennas.
Just a few miles in either direction and no matter the antenna nor how high the hill, you can't get anything. |

Those overhead doors have been on that barn since I was a very small child.
I was always told that the guy who owned Somerset Overhead Door owned that barn/farm.
Such doors are impractical on a livestock barn; cattle would soon have them warped all out of shape.
Note that this barn has underground electrical service which is highly unusual even for a house in Kentucky.

The sad reality is if you're not using it, livestock, storage, whatever, they are just an expense. It costs real money to maintain buildings and if they are not paying back in some way, people just let them go. Humans are a lot like hydraulics! The path of least resistance.
I've got some old buildings here that aren't in great shape but still have stuff stored in them. Need to figure something out as they will need to start coming down at some point. |

This barn was wood boxed and then the wood covered with old-style corrugated metal barn roofing.
Why on earth would somebody paint a barn blue ?
The later additions don't improve upon the appearance; she would look better if all that were gone.
I am sure this big barn has historical significance and I intend to find out.
The huge Columbia City Cemetery is immediately behind the barn.
Merchant Street and the Columbia Fire Department are in the foreground.

          | Where I grew up, 90%-95% of farm buildings were painted either white or red. In our particular little neighborhood, there was one farm that all buildings were a grayish-blue, that farm as long as can remember, the owner did not raise any livestock, and rented out the cropland.

I tried to follow the science, but it was not there. I then followed the money, and that’s where I found the science.

 Big Barn and Three Silos
  https://ibb.co/dw76xxR5" rel="nofollow">
The Big Barn is freestanding, not connected to any of the three silos.
The left and center silos are at opposite ends of the same 120-ft-long feedway barn.
A drag-chain conveyor runs the length of the barn, distributing silage to an equally long trough on both sides of the conveyor.
The right silo, the farthest from the camera, is connected to the right-most farthest 60-ft-long feedway barn.
In these 2014 photos, the left silo, which appears to be the largest of the lot, is clean as a whistle; in the https://www.allischalmers.com/FORUM/barns-and-barnyards_topic206475_post1772603.html#1772603" rel="nofollow - 2023 photos , it is almost completely vine-covered from bottom to top.

          | It seems the standard color for barns was either red or white. In our neighborhood in eastern Kansas, most old style barns had a Star painted on the front. I have a Barn book with different photos of various barns across Kansas, including round barns. Most barns were built to serve a purpose , being livestock and hay. I have seen barns with the loft taken area and filled with large round bales, which adapted them to still be used today. Sadly though, some barns have outlived their usefullness as most doors were only so wide and you can't even drive a modern vehicle in them or store today's modern farm equipment so in turn they have gone into disrepair, fallen down, or been torn down. The landscape scene of rural America has definitely changed |
