Gear reduction starter died on my 6080 so I put a direct drive starter from a 7000 on it to get going.  The 7000 starter worked fine and spun the engine over great. My questions are, would you pay extra for a gear reduction? Where would be the best place to get a new one? Lots of price variations out there, what about quality? Thanks

I an still running the original direct drive starter on mine.  I just had it rebuilt last summer.  Starts perfect every time.

I have switched several diesel engines of various makes/models to gear reduction starters and have found them to be superior in every instance. Your mileage may vary.

Mine still has the original, Lucas, starter. It's been through the shop and works fine. If it dies, will look into a gear reduction replacement. If it's cool out, think under 60, I plug it in. Just 15-20 minutes helps a bunch, more as it gets colder.

I always used to keep two rebuilt Lucas starters on the shelf. Had enough cores to keep that going. When a Lucas was rebuilt or new, they performed fine. But, most of the time, they never held up to the years of service a Delco starter would deliver. I'm all in on gear reduction starters if I was replacing a Lucas just because of that.

If its anything like the Oliver starters the gear reduction starters from places like DB Electrical are much cheaper than original starters and will start the tractor better.
