Well after 10 years on original battery figured it might be time to replace it .
Bought a new battery at Sams Club on sale - setting in shop waiting to install .
Monday went to drive to appt and old battery died in cold , charged it but Jeep started but would not go into gear ( dash message shift into park , then into gear ) would not go into gear after several tries . To cold to work on it outside so waited a day to install new battery .
New battery installed , start car , full cluster of warning lights comes on , including the shift to park when putting in gear , Shut it off and restart , lights on dash seem to reset and it shifts EXCEPT check engine light stays on , drove it about a mile - come back shut it off - restart and light is out and everything works .
Next the stop start feature when idling starts working (it quit 2 years back and dealer said was a $600 fix item) - Evidently the battery voltage controls that computer function and it must measure battery life also - as new battery fixed that feature .

hmm, is the alternator 'regulator' part of the 'computer' ?

Please do NOT get me going on CANbus !! Though I now have a 4 year old battery that NISSAN swore was no good.....

Seems the battery charging system from alternator is interfaced with the stop start feature and if battery is taking a charge , the system shuts down stop start .
I thought the battery life was great and could use it for something else , so bought the new one for Jeep - but cold weather canceled that idea .
Price of batteries seems beyond what one use to pay - part of the new society of pricing.
New battery has 3 year free replacement - and then nothing after .
Bought 2 batteries for truck from Fleet Farm 72 Month warranty - 2 year free replacement but $15 higher priced than regular cost .
Sams was $20 off on sale .So now to find out how long new one lasts . With new size charts it's hard to even match things now .

Well all lead mining in the USA was stopped few years ago. So any battier building in the US is done with reclaimed lead. With some of the impurities not just floating off the top of hot lead from what I read. So, not as good of battery as those built with pure lead. Any new lead battery is being built in China..............built almost good enough.................hopefully.

So with Caly quackery added my guess is batteries almost double the price of 6 to 10 years ago out here.
