Kind of a bittersweet holiday. Daughter is at boyfriend's family. Started a tradition a long time ago of a bunch of us single farmers getting together for Thanksgiving. Food was terrible but no one can screw up Miller genuine draft. This year we were down to me and one other guys who is now in a county nursing home. Otis and i went to see him this morning and smuggled him in a beer. This getting old thing sucks

dr p can relate to the ‘bittersweet’ of the holiday.
Wife and I gave up on trying please families during this holiday, and actually all the holidays.
Got to the point of not enjoyable not matter if we travel to family(hers), or we hosted and family would travel to us. Her Mother would always want to leave early, ‘because your Father doesn’t like to drive in the dark’, which of course means the main meal was to be served early afternoon, so the in-laws were back home before 5pm.
For me, Thanksgiving over the years has lost a lot of ‘its luster’. What was once a celebration of finishing harvest(hopefully) and a profitable year on the farm. Nowadays ‘harvest’ is nearly completed almost a month before Thanksgiving Day. Kids are off from school the whole week now.

The big one will be Sunday at stepson's house. Today was at the old farmstead of my grandparents where my daughter and family live now. She invited a long time friend of mine that has no family close by anymore. A day he greatly appreciated as well as myself

We have floundered a bit trying to do something that suits more family.  We did Fakesgiving as my daughter named it the Saturday before Thanksgiving. The first year kind of worked out. The next year a bunch backed out at the last minute.  Not much interest the 3rd time.

So 3 years ago moved back to the day. Doing it in the church social hall to have room to not crowed anyone. Invited a number people that did not have family close. A success in some ways not so much in others.
