I have come up on a puzzler on some old oil seals with unlegible numbers and the local Napa and Oreillys are claiming no knowledgable way to do a search with the seal size as I was very carerful removing the seal so as to not oblterate any numbers that may still be left,,,,, The first three number are 156_ _ Other numbers on seal are R28 and C/R and USA . I have done several google searches using different wording on "search by size" and I get nowhere,,,,?? I have a good Starrett Dial caliper if someone knows of a site that allows you to enter the id, od, and the width to find the correct seal. Any takers on this one,,,,?? Many Thanks,,,, -

Realize that MOST seals are really METRIC size... common lawn mower shaft is .669 inch bore seal.... that is REALLY 17 mm.

Hi Joe
C/R stands for Chicago/Rawhide, a previous manufacture now owned by SKF.
Here is a link to 'Standard and Metric Oil Seal Size Chart' that will keep you busy.

Try a business that specializes in industrial bearings and drives. They can usually identify what I need from just the measurements. I get most of my bearings and seals from a local company. I hope NAPA is not getting like the other parts stores and hiring people who only know a computer and nothing about parts.

Was in to Napa just yesterday needing a pair of 1157 lamps. Counter guy had never heard of them and had to ask owner who laughed. NO and wouldn't have believed it if not seen it myself.

Hey Hubert,,,,I'm afraid we are already there as I had to ask the counter guy at Napa,, TWICE to at least LOOK and see if he could possibly find it on his computer. Just a few short years ago, there was an older Gentleman that had an Auto parts store that did NOT have a computor ,,,just about 10 books ,,each about 2" thick and if there was a part ever made it would be in one of those books and it might take ole Ken longer than a pair of minutes,,,,BUT FIND IT HE WOULD,,,,!!! To him,it was a matter of taking care of his customers . I kept trading with Ken as I knew it was just a matter of time before the Oreillys and Napas would take him under and he finally closed the doors a couple of years ago and NOW listen to all those that went with the big stores lamenting that they didn't try to keep Ken in business,,,!!!

That’s one of the reasons I support the independent, mom and pop businesses whenever I can. I may pay more but the top notch customer service and keeping the money in the community is worth it.

Finding a good parts person in any type store today is hard, when you do stick with them. There aren't any places local to me anymore that have anything close to a competent parts person, although I do have many contacts all over the country that are willing to go that extra step to serve a customer. I have a room full of old paper catalogs that were being thrown out when everyplace was switching to computer and thought they would never need them any more.
What is the shaft size, bore size, allowable thickness and product you are wishing to seal?
------------- If it was fun to pull in LOW gear, I could have a John Deere. Real pullers don't have speed limits. If you can't make it GO... make it SHINY

I got a catalog from a bearing supplier when I was Millwright and it listed bearings and seals in it - covered about everything made . Seals were listed by class from 1 to 6 depending on the lip design and intended purpose. Shaft size , bore size , depth of bore , material it's holding in or keeping out. So from single lip , dual lip , and or speed of shaft all go into seal type . I could look up a seal I thought would work to replace present application and call supplier to see if they had that seal or comparable replacement . When a shaft is worn with groove in seal surface , you can get a speedy sleeve and matching seal to make new surface rather than replacing shaft / did that on my HD4 axle shaft outboard seal .
