I bought a portable starlink satellite internet system and it showed up yesterday. In the country where I live unlimited internet is expensive if available at all. Was using AT&T exclusively for phone and internet (hot spot) basically like 2 cell phones. No cable service available. Was limited and always going over . I don't hate Elon like some other billionaires so I will give this system a try. I spend most weekends at my friends place by Pittsfield in the western part of the state bowhunting and helping take care of his property. Cell service has fallen off big time for some reason over there. Usually only can get one bar on my phone. Texts only with no photos. Forget about trying to stream anything. I also go out to Utah 2 weeks every year up in the mountains. Hoping this system will take care of any internet needs no matter where I am. So far it's is working great with no snafus . Simple to set up . If I can do it , it must be easy.

Pat, i assume the STARLINK has some type of dish or receiver that you move as you travel... How do you know where to POINT it when you get there ? Maybe its not as restrictive as DISH or DIRECTV on the pointing ?

I had the Verizon Hotspot awhile back, until I got a notice one fall that my service would end in October unless I got an upgrade unit to a 4G model, at a cost to me of nearly $200. Then while talking to the Verizon people I learned that 5G was coming sometime after the first of the year and then I would need to upgrade again or lose service. and yes the limited service was a pain.
Went shopping around and landed at T-Mobile, there hotspot unit is free and the monthly service is much less that what Verizion was. At 100 GB I barely use 20 on a big month. For now, I'm very pleased as long as things stay as they are.

My understanding is, you plug it in and it takes care of itself! Hey, if they can land booster rockets back where they launched from…

As I understand it, the Skylink receiver finds the satellite much like the RV satellite dishes.

I don't have one, but I was speaking with a buddy that DID... he says the initial cost was really high (to acquire the unit), had it for about three months, liked the system and service until a hailstorm damaged the shell of the feedhorn/LNA assembly...  He called for a replacement, but they refused, said he'd need a whole new assembly, which was considerably more expensive than he was willing.

I'm not sure why they'd do that, but if that's what they're doing, they shouldn't...

So if you're in an area prone to such circumstances, mebbie put a stout piece of netting over the unit to keep it from getting whacked by falling flying stuff...

I’m gonna ask a stupid question.
Can this be used for tv as well?
The only way we can get Razorback games is streaming them.
We’ve shut off our satellite internet and our tv satellite goes away early November.
I don’t care about regular tv just the Razorback football games.

That being the case, Skylink ought to do just fine unless I'm being dopey and missing the point here?

Thought about Skylink until saw Projected Price increases above the entry cost point.  Would replace our Internet and Satellite TV which is also about to change(Direct and DISH are Merging) where those prices for all the above are getting seriously ignorant.  Only really good aspect of Skylink is Transportable and no limit of point of use.

I could be wrong about this, but I think Skylink is internet only. I think they will provide nothing for TV. Skylink will provide the same thing your present internet provider does. Skylink provides high speed internet, especially where there is no other option for high speed internet.

You will still need to find a streaming service that has the programming you want (Razorback games).

Yes you can stream TV with Starlink . It does require unobstructed view of the sky . I am currently moving mine around trying to get optimal performance. I have a lot of tall trees near my house. Also a 50 meter cord is all you get. Also requires Hulu, Roku, Firestick. Have not invested in those yet .will let you know.
Unlimited mobile version 165 a month
Antenna, modem cords 299
Fixed home unit 120 a month .
Sure there will be more charges along the way
Just did a speed test after last antenna adjustment 399 Mbps ,whatever that means

Are starlink and skylink the same company?

OK, now you guys have me wondering.

I was under the impression that Starlink provided only internet access and, to stream TV programming, you would have to use an outside streaming service (like Firestick, Hulu, Sling, Fubo, Direct TV, etc.), like other high-speed internet providers.

Are you guys saying Starlink provides their own streaming as part of their basic service, at no extra cost or just high-speed internet that allows you the ability to stream?

How to watch TV with Starlink?
Starlink is only internet. You can use a Firestick or Roku on your TVs for streaming. You can also use a Roko device also if youy don't have a smart TV.

Jul 25, 2024

We have  ATT satelite service for the Cell phone , Internet and TV... We have
an Antenna to watch Network Channels ( local) and use ROKU or TUBIE to
watch their TV shows (internet feeds the TV). .. Both are FREE.. not like Disney or Netflicks.....
I think Starlink would work the same way........... Grandkids also watch You Tube
videos on the TV over the internte, just like a computer..

Looked at my first post. Starlink is what I have . Don't know where Skylink came from, I went back and edited. If I could remember stuff I wouldn't be a plumber. Got a Roku today, basically plug it into TV.It finds wifi from Starlink and displays it on tv .Another remote for it .Searching through the free channels to see what is available. Plenty of free channels and plenty that want you to sign up and start paying. Doubt any of this technology is worth the price or effort. Need to learn this new stuff or get left behind. Just hate shoveling out money for it.

there are several FREE channels.. Some you have to SIGN UP and it will remember what your watching if its a SERIES and go to the NEXT show the next time you turn on the TV... Other  Channels you have to pay $5- 10- 15 a month ... we dont do that. (Disney, Sling, NETflex.)

For FREE---ROKU is the most popular and has very easy access... We also use TUBI and PLUTO for various movies ... all 3 are FREE.
