I'm getting severe spikes of engine ignition voltage on the battery terminals when running. Disconnected all gen/reg wires, still there...ideas? Coil ground? It's a new coil

I guess maybe it's just too much noise for my cheap digital volt meter...hundreds of volts (fluctuating wildly) on your 6v battery terminals is disconcerting:(

Negative ground?  The only way I'd expect to see ignition voltage pulses at the battery would be either a bad main battery connection or perhaps something with the condensor (new ones are rubbish, how much arcing do you get at the points?)

I'm probably missing something, but that's all I can think for the moment. May check back in when my brain returns from strike action, if you've not resolved it by then.

edit- may just be the noise affecting the meter you're right, but surely it's far enough away from the coil that it'd not affect it. Gut feeling says bad connection somewhere

Think the meter, goes haywire if I just hold the pos lead in my hand with neg lead dangling anywhere near the tractor...analog meter that dad dug out not affected

YEP... the old $15. meters will do that... You can POINT it at the tractor without even touching the battery and it will JUMP !!

Like them all, but love the "B"s.
