What are you calling a defect? I see nothing out of sorts.

Two things. The dribbling of cast on the bell housing and the divot at the end of the starter bolt.. Maybe this is normal? I am OCD.

It's been like that for nearly 50 years. A transmission casting isn't like a "show car". It has served its purpose well with many more years of useful life left.
