Hi, I managed to source a starter for my 1947 B, here in the UK. I’m having an issue with it not always engaging in the ring gear, as a result the ring gear is showing signs of damage. Why doesn’t do it every time ?

probably a worn ring gear that needs to be replaced. Mine does the same thing and I find rolling it forward or backward a couple inches will reposition the gear and it will catch

Due to the design of a 4 cylinder motor, the engine STOPS about 70% of the time at the EXACT SAME POSITION... So you are engaging the same teeth on the ring gear every time you try to start it... If it happens to MOVE 2-3 teeth further when stopping, then it will engage better the next time.

Could be weak parts on the starter motor, but MOST of the time, its the ring gear teeth.. Pull the starter out and LOOK into the hole.. You will get a good idea of whats happening.

Make sure your starter drive gear goes out all the way to the end of the nose cone. Sometimes a problem of mixing parts together to fix a starter.
