1963 Nebraska Test lists the first D-21 tested as chassis s/n 1012 and engine s/n as 3D-1046. Remember the s/n's start at 1001. So engine #46 was installed in chassis #12. Nothing surprising about that.  1965 Nebraska Test on the series 2 model D-21 has chassis 2109 and engine at 3D-2265.  So, you can see the engine numbers gaining by 156. These extra build engines were being used in construction equipment, gen sets, etc.  As time goes on the D-21 was replaced by the 220 and 210, which started with new s/n's of their own, but the 426 engines continued on with their s/n's from the first D-21 thru the last 3-D serial number used on the 426/3000 series engine in the early 1980's.
