I have a 79 model 185 that needs the engine overhauled. My question is do I have to split the tractor to get it out or not?

To remove the engine assembly will require rolling the front end (includes radiator) and side frames away leaving the engine hanging from the bell housing. If you want to do an "in-frame overhaul" you do it from there. "Out of frame overhaul" you remove it completely. Why does it need an overhaul ??

I’m not exactly sure what happened but when I shut it off after a day of cutting a field the compression was high enough to blow the dipstick tube & a plug out.

Is the radiator FULL ??? If not, remove the engine oil fill cap and see if there is shaving creme on it, which if there is, you have coolant in the engine oil. Is the breather hose that hangs down the left side of the engine PLUGGED on the end ??? This will cause pressure inside the crankcase blowing oil the dipstick. Does it start and run on all 6 cylinders ?? If not it may have a scored piston.

It depends on if you are doing a in-frame overhaul or out of frame overhaul. If your rear main seal is not leaking and your crankshaft is ok, you can get by with a in-frame overhaul if you wish. To get the crankshaft out or replace the rear main you'll have to separate the engine from the bellhousing.

The radiator is still full. I haven’t tried starting it because when I was messing with the dipstick tube it’s showing hardly any oil. Plus the plug missing on the other side. I didn’t want to do any more damage by trying to start it.
