Hello All,

I'm new here with a newly purchased HD6. It has sat for 20 years due to the trans shifter not being able to shift gears. I was able to get it to run very easily and for the most part it runs great. I removed shifter and aligned the fork and it never goes to neutral. I can't get reverse either. I know that the fork is either broken or compromised to some extent. My question is do have to remove the trans to replace the fork if needed?

I am not sure but should need to removed the transmission but you could check by the inspection side plate transmission it could be some rust on shaft

I looked it up in my service manual and I think it would be nigh unto impossible to do without removing the transmission.
Best wishes Smile

Thanks for the responses. Looks like I'll be removing the trans. luckily the trans can be removed pretty easily. The rail moves but the gear doesn't change it stays in 1st.

Did you check the plunger locking

Not really sure of  the plunger but I think that is what is actuated by the clutch and has a rubber sleeve boot. It does move when the clutch is activated. The 1st/rev fork however is loose and can be moved sideways instead of just for and aft. The other 2 forks have no movement sideways and moves back and forth only. Due to the fork moving outboard for 1st and reverse the shifter bottom comes out of the gate. When all forks aligned it stays in 1st gear and won't go into reverse or neutral.

You could check too the 3 capscrew shifting ball spring maybe the ball 1\2 are freeze on shaft.

Okay I will check that also. Would a frozen ball prevent the fork from moving for aft? Remember it moves but what should be neutral is still 1st gear. if I move it to reverse the it stays in 1st. If I move any other fork it binds in 2 gears.

Thanks for recommendations.

Sounds like a bent or broken fork, or possibly wear on the tip(s) of the fork...

If the shaft move the ball are't freeze on well could be the fork or the the lock plunger is in trouble
