I know many people love the AC running gears, but they were not all that good. No way to grease the steering rods was a big mistake. Back in the day, I bought a new 701 gear for a gravity box and within 3 years, you couldn't tow it down the road at any speed. Face the FACTS guys, they were JUNK.

Who cares if you think they are junk. There are people that think Deere are the best thing. He wants them and can collect what he wants. I want ac running gears too and I plan on using them. Their short comings are part of loving the color.

The steering rod can be fixed very easily with rod ends. Ive got a Allis running gear i made into a header cart. It pulls fine.

Here’s my consortium of AC wagon gear ID tag info that I’ve collected since 1990s. Any occasion (auctions,private listings, etc…) that I notice an AC gear, I took/copied a photo of its ID tags to begin to understand how Electric Wheel Co.(EWC) manufactured for Allis-Chalmers, Massey-Ferguson, New Idea, Electric, Sears, David Bradley, Montg-Wards, IH, Case, Oliver, Minneapolis-moline, Dakon, etc…

You’re welcome. It has been a fun journey. So the sequence serial numbers represent each wagon gear within a particular model. For example, my listing for model 1010 contains 12 different gears. The model, cat no., & beginning serial 10 could be added to the last 3or4 sequential numbers to complete each tag ID. Like the following:

1010 cat 2051547, serial 10 1414,
1010 cat 2051547, serial 10 1611,
1010 cat 2051547, serial 10 1649,
etc,,1698,1775,2346,2405,1569,2356,1243,
1777,1780..

So my entire listing, represents 72 different AC gears from the 300 thru 1010 models.

What brand/model of gravity box did it carry?

It was a Kory box. Not large by any means and only used while picking ear corn. I know Allis didn't build their wagons. In fact, hardly any major company built their own. I think maybe JD built their own and they were a very good wagon gear. Grease fittings everywhere are the key to long life of any wagon.

I acquired an AC 701 gear that the previous owner had installed a Ficklin 300 gravity box that also contained 14" extensions ~ 371 cu.ft ~ 297 bu of grain x 60 #/bu = 17,800 lbs of grain....! Surprisingly, the 701 gear had held up fine, but the Ficklin box was an earlier version which did not contain extra plating(boxing) on it's C-channel style sills. So it had suffered sill(metal runners) fatigue at each of it's 4 contact points where sills rested on the running gear's front & rear frames.

Most every company brought their wagon gears from EWC I've had wagon gears that the ID tag said "manufactured by Electric Wheel Company" but had a big name brand paint and decals. This is also true of the Allis Chalmers gears, the MNI refers the wagon gear part numbers to the EWC factory
