I got a G several years ago that only seemed to have 3 forward gears. After reading some of the threads on here, I took the shift lever out, found the gate that was in the wrong place, slid it back, and then I had a creeper gear. I've lost it a couple of times over the years and always been able to fix it the same way. Last year I lost it again, and when I took the shift lever out, I couldn't see the gate for the creeper gear. I can't tell if I'm a lot stupider than I was, or if something else broke. From my  memory, there should be a gate in the slot on the right side of the picture. I'm thinking maybe something broke off? All the other gears work fine, but I miss my creeper gear!

Can you see down in there and see if the square tab has broken off?  Odd that it would jump out of place so often. Creeper gears are the best thing ever invented! Got Lo-Boy 185 with creeper gear and thats all I use! Its totally useless without it!

Most likely, the shifter rail has just gone forward enough that the end of the shifter lever can't grab it, remember that rail isn't a part of the shifter assy. As in picture below, there isn't a lot to grab in the first place so with a bit of wear on the end of the lever and a bit of wear and slop in the shifter guide pins it's easy for them to have trouble if not shifting carefully. You should be able to take a screwdriver or thin bar and reach forward through the hole and catch the notch and pull it back. If it's happening this often, sounds like it's time to look at everything a bit closer.

I can't see anything broken off, but it's hard to see  very well through the shifter hole. Is the best way to see in there to drain the transmission and remove the plate behind the battery?

Jack that side up and you should be able to pull the plate with the forks without draining. I just did that. You may lose a drop or two.

Thanks for the tip MDM, jacking up that side worked great. I took the cover off, and turns out the rod had just gotten pushed so far forward that I couldn't get to it the normal way from the top, but it was easy to get too from the side, so now my creeper gear is back! Cultivating is much less stressful now. The only thing I could see in there that didn't look quite right is the gate (not sure if that is the right word) that the shifter lever moves in to select the gears appears to have broken at some point and somebody welded it back together. I'm wondering if maybe it isn't lined up quite right and that is allowing the shifter lever to move in ways it shouldn't be moving?
