What’s the D14’s going for that are in nice shape? Looking into one with an older restoration, only flaw is the occasional jumping out of 3rd going down hill. Really appreciate the owner being honest with me when I asked. I’m not against tearing it down to replace damaged parts but I need to obviously take that into consideration. Anyone done the detent change? Alex(A&W)has a really good video on the procedure. Haven’t seen the tractor in person so I’m not positive if it’s a candidate.

Detent change only works if shift collar and drive lugs on gear are not too far gone .If you hold it in gear and go down hill will it stay in gear or kick shifter . No pictures ??? .You know we need more information LOL

The tractor is 6 hours away from me and have not seen it in person. I’m uncertain if that procedure would work or not. Let’s say worse case I have to split it, parts are around $900 worse case scenario. What would it be valued at with that needing to be done?

Lots of variable involved in a general price range. I have 3 good D-14's and one parts tractor. Two are loader tractors, one a narrow front mowing tractor and all have power steering which is a requirement for me. I have seen usable D-14's sell for $1500-$4500. I recently bought a nice running 59 with great wheels, rubber and power steering but a cobbled up 3rd gear transmission issue and old one way trip loader for $2500. Price a set of new tires in that original 26 inch size with wheels, as well as a working complete power steering system and you probably would see why.Tires with spin out wheels, power steering, drawbar, snap couplers, working traction booster, etc all factor in to value. Do gauges work, 6-12 volt conversion (early), wide front adjustable vs narrow front. Sheet metal condition, side panels intact, etc also affect value to some folks.
The 3rd gear issue is very common and is also instructive as to prior use by previous owner(s) since it is somewhat self inflicted. My NF mowing tractor came with 3rd gear pop out issues, but only under load downhill so I have lived with it for a decade with no issues since it is job specific for the most part.
Bottom line for the buyer is what you are looking for and what you will use it for. Power steering on a non loader tractor is not a requirement for many users. A decent restoration, not just rattle can paint and new gauges, would cost 3-4 times the average cost of of one of these 3 year tractors. Parts are somewhat available but not always cheap and certainly not like the WD's. They are handy smaller tractors compared to the D-15 and D17 and priced lower accordingly in my area due to their limited use.

Probably doesn't mean much but I bought a D15 that I was familiar with last year non original wheels,3pt that was in need of a little work,PS,very good sheet metal,WF, stays in all gears,sitting covered for 10+ years,$1300.Spent about $300 on it,changed it to Snap Coupler hitch,runs and operates good,getting ready to mow hay with it.

I have 3 tractors that I have had to fix the gear jumping issues on. Not doing another one. It doesn't matter how much of a bargain that D14 is, I would not bother with it. For a little bit more money you can find one that does not have any transmission problems and save yourself a lot of time and aggravation. Yes, there are still D14s out there without tranny problems. Two out of my 3 have never had problems.

New front tires and really good shape Firestones on the rear. It was sandblasted and painted in 2002. Shed kept. Present owner purchased knowing of the 3rd gear issue many years ago. He used it for a rake and wagon tractor and worked around the issue all this time so I’m guessing it’s not a constant gear popper. Sheet metal and the rest of it is really nice. Factory 6v. It’s a specific model that I’m looking for and they don’t come up for sale very often. Present price is $3,500. Rims are all good also. Won’t budge on the price

the value of Anything is dependant on WHO wants it and WHAT is it worth to YOU... I have paid MORE than the going rate for something before, if i REALLY wanted that specific piece.
and this tractor does not sound like it really needs any work... maybe just use it AS IS .

A quick confirm for 6 or 12 , is to look at the starter. IF it has a 'band' around the brush end, it's a 6 volt starter. I had 4 D-14s, the 3 I sold had good '3rd gear' trannies.... I never use 3rd, so not an issue for me, use 1 to till, 4 to get there.,well used to... sigh...... Just remember A-C isn't making D-14s anyomore so get as MANY as you can, NOW !!!!!

3500 is very high for a gear jumper. What is specific about it that makes you want it?

I will gladly spill the beans if the owner and I come to a compromise. It’s not a huge deal, but it is to me. I’m only interested because of one thing and I will let you know if or I don’t get it. Minor to most but it’s important to me. Really, the 3rd gear issue isn’t a deal breaker just asking to meet me in the middle.

Well it looks like it’s gonna work out. Hope to pick it up next week as long as I’m happy with it once I arrive. It’s a 1960 black bar grill D14. I never see them for sell locally. Will become a little brother to my black bar grill D17. Only 501 were built per Norms book.

I guess mine is one of those 501. My 1960 black bar grille D14. Serial number 22999.

First off that’s a nice original D14. Actually it’s 510 narrow front tractors, 1,690 roll shift front axle D14’s. I failed to mention it’s a narrow front just like my D17. I typed 501 by mistake.

Gary that is correct. Not sure why I like the grill so much I guess because it’s different than any other one that AC built. The serial number confirms its period correct.

I once had a D14 that was a gear jumper in 3rd only going downhill. Any other time it would stay in, even then if I held the gearshift on downhill times it wouldn't jump out. It had Char-Lyn PS on it and was so sensitive that it was dangerous at road speed. I really liked the lower and narrower hood and lower fenders compared to the D15II that I got to replace the D14. Had the D14 had factory PS I might not have been inclined to get rid of it.

Oh your really getting into the good stuff. 510 NF, 1,690 Roll shift front axle in 1960, only 14 SFW in 1959, none in 1960. 40 SFW in 1958. Those single wheels were very rare. How fun is this!

I’m really excited about this venture. Think about this, 510 total production NF D14’s in 1960. 64 years ago, how many are working tractors now? This is an investment for my kids, my wife. At least that’s my reasoning for buying this one lol. Plus I get to have fun enjoying it. I’m just trying to justify it for my wife lol.
