I've had what I believed to be a leaky rear outboard axle seal for a while now, and while I was in the process of replacing the rim on that side this weekend I thought we should go after that seal as well. I'm waiting on the service manual(AC-202) to come in the mail but this question is bugging the daylights outta me.
When I got the cap off I found what seemed to be an old very rotted out gasket or seal that would have been between the axle bearings and the cap for for the final drive. I don't have good pic of the material but you can see a little chunk of it at the bottom of the housing next to the outer ring of the axle.

Is there supposed to have been a seal between the axle bearing and the cap?
Seems to me there shouldn't be because I would think the outboard axle seal and the o-ring on the cap would be good enough, but I'm not sure.
Anyone have a picture of the final drive assembly from the manual they can post?
And while I'm there should I replace the bearing as well? There is about 1/8" of play in and out, and none up and down play.

There are shim's under the cap that adjust axle end play. I dont remember if Allis used paper or tin shim's
