Hi everyone,

I have what I believe is a 1966 190xt gas tractor. The transmission is jumping out of gear, so I have decided to have it rebuilt. Are there any specific updates to make while rebuilding? Are there specific areas to look at while it is torn apart? Is there a preferable place to source parts? Thank you in advance for the help!

Hey,, one in this serial number you may want to check into parts especially a gasser, gears etc before you tear it apart , as some stuff is no longer available- should be doner tractors around for that tho

Pretty vague information so far. The first 190XT in January of 1966 was chassis s/n 8210. The last 190XT in Dec 1966 was chassis s/n 13372.  All 190XT's prior to s/n 9001 had the complete drive line updated to what chassis 9001 tractors and up got from the factory. This included the complete transmission, bull pinion gears, bull gears, axles and intermediate/PTO gears located just ahead of the Power Director clutch. The prior to s/n 9001 transmissions have no parts available any more if it wasn't "updated" as it should have been. Your tractor came with a 2-pinion differential. It could have been updated to a 4-pinion differential some time after January of 1969 if someone had the rear end apart. Improvements (if yours has the newer transmission) would be a new 3rd-4th shift coupling, new shift fork and 3rd-4th shift rail. These parts allow for a deeper engagement of the shift coupling when in 4th gear. It also needs a new front countershaft drive gear to make these other parts fit. Your chassis s/n is on the left side of the clutch bell housing  stamped vertically. So what is your chassis serial number ????   How do you intend to use this tractor??? A four-pinion differential shouldn't be needed on a gas engine machine. It is good to overfill the transmission 2 to 3 gallons more to flood the differential gears with oil. They did this on 4-pinion models.

Thank you both for the replies. The serial number is 11,660. I do not plan to use it hard. I envision using it for hay work and pulling a 6 row planter over a few acres. I might pull a disk occasionally with it. It may be getting a diesel engine swapped into it as well. I am not sure if that will happen yet. Thank you.

Spending $$$$$ to repair a transmission is one thing. Then, spending $$$$$ to convert it to a turbo diesel engine will surely exceed the value of the tractor. Not a good plan in my opinion, but it's your $$$$$ spend it as you want.
