What common bolt would 304 Stainless be comparable to strength-wise ?

Would it be an okay choice for using as starter mounting studs screwed into Aluminum bell-housing ?

The starter fits in there like a gun-barrel and all the studs do is clamp it in place.

How would the 304 Stainless compare in strength to Black Oxide Alloy Steel ?

I have found the stainless in exactly the length I need; whereas, anything else I am going to have to cut to length.

type 304 stainless is 73,200 psi tensile strength where good quality grade 2 bolts are 105,000. Stainless is soft, and stringy. I would not use it in this application myself. Anti seize on grade five or better fasteners is what would be best.

Thanks; I am not very familiar when it comes to stainless and was somewhat surprised as to how weak it is compared to normal Grade 2 bolts; Thanks.

I use plenty silver stuff; I slather it on everything.

Galling is a common problem with SS fasteners , only advantage is they are less corrosive , unsure of galvanic pitting between SS and aluminum

A better selection would be 18-8 stainless steel as much stronger in tensile strength but can oxidize slightly. Almost as good at corrosion prevention as 304 but not quite and a much better fastener material.
