I am doing a total engine rebuild and a restoration on a 1957 D-14, S/N 5242.  I need to change the flywheel ring gear as it is badly worn and would like to convert to 12 volt as I have a 1959 D-14 that is 12v.  My question is this:  the current ring gear is 93 tooth and it looks like available new ring gears for 12 v are 116 t.  Also I will need to replace the starter and generator system with 12 volt upgrades.  It looks like from specs I have found the 116 t gear will fit on the flywheel.  I have converted other tractors and older trucks to 12 v so I think I have the program down, just don't know if the ring gears will fit flywheel that had a 93 t on it.  Anyone have any experience with this, or good advice?  Thanks in advance.

read what you are buying.. the 6 volt ring gear goes with the 6 volt starter... 12 v gear goes with the 12 v starter... you can run either on 12 volts... but if you need EVERYTHING, get all 12v PARTS.

Thanks, Steve.  That's what I figured.  Just wanted to check.  I also think I will go with negative ground so I can use LED lights.  Lots more light for way less amps.  I've done that on other tractors.

you might want to consider an alternator with internal reg... as compared to generator with voltage regulator

yes, starter pinion gear needs to be changes as well....
I used Delco CS-130 series alternators on my 4  D-14s...no need to trim tin ! just use generator pulley on the alternator. I also used a 2 wire ,1/2" round light in the dash as the 'idiot' light.

a 6 volt starter will have a brush shield or band on it, 12v  is a 'solid' shell.

Understood, I intend to get 12 v starter to match new ring gear.

Original set-up from the Factory: D-10, D-12, D-14

Early 6 Volt system had 10 tooth Bendix and 93 tooth Ring Gear.

Later 12 Volt system had 9 tooth Bendix and 116 tooth Ring Gear.

I get them from NAPA

Original 6 volt generator can be rewired for 12 volts, need a new 12 volt regulator as well..  I have several like that.  Starter can stay 6 volt, just spins faster.  But since you are changing the ring gear, you will need a starter that mates up to it.

I offer a complete 12V wiring system if interested. I also rebuild the Starter motors as well.
