I recall that happening to me about 25 years ago. The pressure plate in the hand clutch housing broke in half and had to be replaced. Hope that didn't happen to yours. My 2 cents on the topic.

Remove the battery box and then the cover underneath of the battery box and have a look to see what is or isn't working.

You could do a better job of describing the problem so maybe you can get help. When was the last time you were able to drive the tractor?? What have you done to the tractor since then?? Why do you think the hand clutch is the problem ?? Does the hand clutch lever feel normal and "snap" in and out of engagement ??????
|
Posted By: hunter321
Date Posted: 28 Apr 2024 at 3:58pm
Sorry, I can start and drive the tractor right now with the foot clutch no problem. This tractor had sat for 15 years before I fixed it and I never tried the hand clutch. I was going to use the hand clutch to bail hay with my roto bailer this year. But when I engaged it the tractor didn't stop moving after letting out the foot clutch.

Hand clutch lever FORWARD should release the hand clutch. The hand clutch should "snap" when you throw the lever fully forward. Sometimes you need to hit the brakes to get the hand clutch to release and stop forward motion. I hope you have the transmission and hand clutch area full of oil ???
|
Posted By: hunter321
Date Posted: 28 Apr 2024 at 4:13pm
Yes there is oil everywhere it needs to be
|
Posted By: hunter321
Date Posted: 28 Apr 2024 at 4:19pm
I believe that the tractor will drive perfectly normal even with the hand clutch in the forwards position right now
|

Then check your linkage for wear. With the tractor in gear and the hand clutch lever is all the way forward, will the brakes stop the tractor ?
|
Posted By: DrAllis
Date Posted: 28 Apr 2024 at 4:44pm
DOES IT SNAP WHEN YOU THROW THE LEVER AHEAD ?? DID YOU STEP ON THE BRAKES TO TRY AND STOP IT ??
|
Posted By: hunter321

Yes the breaks will stop the tractor with the hand clutch in the forwards position. Yes the hand clutch snaps

I'm only 17 If you say that there is no problem can you explain how to work the hand clutch
|
Posted By: DrAllis
Date Posted: 28 Apr 2024 at 5:04pm
The hand clutch is a 2 or 3 disc clutch that operates in transmission oil. Because it is designed to and runs in oil, it is a very long life clutch. It can and does "creep" sometimes because it runs in oil. It sometimes requires a load to get it to release. These are NORMAL traits and is how they are. The hand clutch is designed to be used on hay balers to stop forward motion and keep the PTO turning. It is made to be used hundreds of times a day if need be.

Ok How do I engage the hand clutch Do I push in the foot clutch and the brakes and then push the hand clutch to engage it
|
Posted By: DrAllis
Date Posted: 28 Apr 2024 at 5:15pm
Hand clutch lever fully FORWARD to STOP (disengage). Pull hand clutch lever fully rearward to make the tractor move (engage). The hand clutch is designed to be operated by itself and has nothing to do with the foot clutch. Oil level check plugs are square heads down below the battery box and the clutch pedal lock device. Oil level should be FULL at both plugs.

It would help you to get an operators manual, read it, if you don't fully understand, reread it until you do. Operators manuals were written to familiarize a new operator with the equipment they were written for, SAFTY being the key issue.

The purpose of the hand clutch is to release power to the rear wheels, allowing the tractor to stop moving while still allowing the PTO to continue running.
I spent many hours running a WD which works just like your WD45, and I learned to really appreciate that hand clutch. Just push it forward and the tractor stops (unless you are on a hill, then you need the brakes to keep from rolling away).
Pull back on the hand clutch and away you go! Much smoother than the foot clutch.
I always use the foot clutch to engage the PTO.

Why don't you take it for a drive? Engine running. Place the hand clutch lever fully forward. Push in the foot clutch and shift into 3rd gear. Hold the brakes and let out fully on the foot clutch. Release the brakes. Gently and slowly pull rearward on the hand clutch lever. Push forward to make it release and roll to a stop. Smooooth as silk if you do it right.

That didn't work I pushed the foot clutch and the brakes in and had the hand clutch forward. Then I shifted into 3rd and let of the foot clutch with my feet on the breaks and the hand clutch forward and the tractor took off and didn't stop

Tome to pull the cover under the bsttery box. The clutch could ave been run a lot with no oil and be ruined the disks could be wore out and jaming it some one could have welded the clutch that was sliping. Once you het the cover off push the hand clutch lever foward stick a feeler guage in it in the released position the sbsoluted minium as around .035" should be closer tp .060"

I had one of my 45's that I had to push HARD on the brakes and push/pull on the hand clutch to allow it to work. After sitting so long, they tend to stay 'stuck' together. DO NOT ruing your brakes doing this, as that is another story!! But keep trying it and push/pull the hand clutch while the brakes are jammed.
Worst scenario is IF the clutch is 'welded' together, you can try GENTLY to get the plates apart after you have taken the batt. box and the cover off. Use a putty knife to try and get it between the clutch faces.
Good luck!

From the hand clutch itself. That keeps the pressure plate contained which allows for a NEUTRAL/ disengaged position of the clutch plates/discs. That one is junk. I doubt that a new one can be had from AGCO. If you found a good used one you might be able to worm in into place in-chassis when the hand clutch fully engaged exposing the groove that wire fits into.

That is the snap ring that holds clutch together. It's bent . Should be a perfect circle. Your clutch cannot function properly . There was no "snap" in the clutch like that. You were asked about the "snap".

If the rest of the clutch is okay, replacing the ring should make good to go. I'm pretty sure you can get it back in place in the tractor. I think it has to be snapped in not released but I'm not sure.

You have to get one end started and pry it over the edge as you work it around. It will distort some as you go but be fine once in place.its up to you to figure out how to pry and where to pry. It will be a frustrating learning experience but it's possible.

If the ring is not too bad you can save it. Flatten it on vice or anvil with hammer. Compress it a bit to get to the size you want and try again. To get it in place use snap ring pliers unless you do not have space to do that.

Hunter I can't help with the clutch but I sense some frustration. These guys are trying to help with the info you have given them. Always tell what the whole problem is, what you (or someone else) has done, parts found and the results. Most problems with these tractors have been dealt with before. Also pics are super helpful to all. Always tell if you're making progress or not. Shows you appreciate the help. You gotta love these old machines or why the h#ll would you have one. Good luck!

I almost forgot to ask, what is the bell housing. The instructions say I need to jack up the tractor under the bell housing. Also is there anywhere else that I need to support before rolling the tractor apart
|
Posted By: SteveM C/IL
Date Posted: 04 May 2024 at 9:47am
Bell housing is the casting bolted to rear of engine which houses the foot clutch. If a wide front you can wedge 2X4's between axle and frame rails to keep vertical stability and place a jack under bell housing. Block front tires each side to keep it from moving. A narrow front is not stable and is top heavy. Need a splitting stand or "A" frame attatched to frame rails hanging from a hoist.. Once front half is well supported you put a floor jack under drawbar next to snap coupler bell and roll back half away from front half. If you don't have a concrete floor to work on you will likely have a big failure.
|

Can you post a picture of the bell housing for a narrow front. Could I support the front end with a giant cable spool underneath it. I am splitting the tractor outside with no concrete and it will be held together by 4 1'5" pieces of 3/4 in all thread so it doesn't split to far. I have 2 farm hi lift jacks and a floor jack. Do I put the spool or jack under the transmission clutch housing.

I have split a similar size tractor on the dirt all by myself. I put a piece of plywood under the transmission area and used a floor jack to support the transmission, then rolled the rear half of the tractor back. The fun part was lining up the two-stage clutch and getting it all back together.
I had everything well blocked for safety.

Hard to see everything. One brake rod unhooked it takes 2. Looks like a bottle jack under the back half. How do you roll it away on that? It's fixed and can't move. The front needs a jack too because you can't block it in the perfect position. Need to be able to vary the height. You may well be just in a bind from not being in line. Going back together is much trickier because it has to be nearly perfect alignment and the big redi rod doesn't align anything.

Some words of encouragement. You're doing something at 17 in the dirt. Some mechanics wouldn't do in a perfect garage. Just keep learning as you go, be safe, and try things.
I applaud you for splitting a tractor. Let alone as one of the first things you do and outside on the dirt!
Support it well. If it falls you certainly won't be able to pick it up, and if it falls on you, you really won't be able to put it back together.

Have the hand clutch engaged/locked before you split the tractor to make it easier to roll it back together. The bent snap ring may be twisted back into shape (maybe) by using a bench vise. If that snap ring doesn't fit in the groove well, it may not stay put and you get to do this all over again. Lastly, the reason the original snap ring blew out of the groove may be because the groove is WORN, not being able to hold the snap ring well. Tack welding the ends of the snap ring to the groove would be a way to insure things stay in place and I don't give a rip about "welding" it making the two pieces unuseable. If the groove is worn out, welding the snap ring into the groove solves the problem. Make sure to vise grip the snap ring down tight into the groove before welding it.

Ok. Could you see from the video what could be causing the tractor to not split any further. Is the shaft that is holding the hand clutch supposed to come out

The clutch shaft can pull out of trans. Nothing holding it in place. The roller bearing inside will be fine unless cage is totally worn out then may fall apart. When going back together take that shaft and put it through hand clutch plates and into front pilot to get everything lined up then stick it back in trans. Lock foot clutch down so you can rotate hand clutch by hand while trying to slide trans back in place. Probably best to put trans in gear to hold shaft while turning hand clutch.

Ok So what would be causing me to not be able to split the tractor. Is it just how I have the jacks or the ground

How do I get the clutch shaft out so I can remove the hand clutch once I get it split enough. Also how do I unbolt the clutch without it spinning
