Should be in the field instead of working on it, but like the subject line says, my 8550 won't stay in reverse. All other gears work fine. Pretty much just went from working fine to this. Just now pulled the cab floor plate off, everything looks in order as far as shifting linkage. Had it shut off, seemed to go imto reverse nicely. Started it up, as I slowly let the clutch out, just as soon as it started to move, it kicked out of gear and made a heck of a gear grinding noise. Does it pay to pull the transmission cover off, or is there quite likely something much deeper Appreciate any help. Thanks Darrel

Thinking from a distance i think id put it in reverse and put a wrench or pry bar or something on the shifter and make sure the cable is pushing it all the way into reverse. You may have already done that. If it is id say its a worn fork

I had a bad cable on a 7060. It ruptured in the middle. Check shift cable end to end just to be sure and be sure cable ends are securely in there brackets. If it happened "just like that", it sounds like it's not internal. Good luck. Leon B MO

With the cab floor panel removed, I can see that all of the shifting is taking place properly. Right down to the fact that when pulling the tee handle back into reverse, it travels farther then it does when going into the other two gears that are on the rearward position of the tee handle. But, as I was looking down at the top of the transmission, a twenty plus year old memory came back to me, of pulling the transmission cover off of my 7580 back then. Must be old age, but I can't for 100 percent certainty that it was the same issue, but I think maybe it was, but I do remember that whatever the issue was, I was easily able to resolve it by removing the transmission cover and putting a little fix on something. So taking the transmission cover off is definitely my next step. But, if memory serves me correctly, in order to avoid some un-due heart aches, there is a particular gear that the transmission should be in before lifting the tranny cover off. Seems like being in neutral would be logical, but something lurking in my mind says 1st gear????? Could anyone shed some light on that question???? Thanks, Darrel

It's not neutral, sticks in my mind it was fourth gear.

Transmission linkage to be adjusted (centered) to reach full detent in 2nd gear and reverse. These two gears require the most stroke to reach detent. Trans in neutral for cover removal and installation.
