| I recently bought a D14 in decent shape. The seller had installed a 12 volt battery but everything else is 6v. I put an 8v battery in it at someones advice and it will hardly turn the engine over and will not start it. If I jump it with a 12v battery it starts immediately. I have checked the connections, and they all seem to be tight. The battery registers 8.54 volts. The battery cables are the heavy 6v type. What am I missing? |

"IF" the battery is good and the CABLES and CLEAN and the GROUND BOLT is in good shape ....... then the starter is just old and tired... 12v will cover up many problems. ------------- Like them all, but love the "B"s. |

Get your starter rebuilt. 8 Volt batteries are band aids for poorly maintained electrical systems. Later D14s were 12 volt from the factory - yours might be one. The starter may be good if it turns over well on 12v. The battery may still be suspect even while showing good 8+ voltage. You could find out with a battery load tester. I've had more than one 12v that showed OK voltage but still short of decent cranking power. ------------- Currently- WD,WC,3WF's,2 D14's B. Previously- I 600,TL745,200,FL9,FR12,H3,816 LBH. Yup. I have a diesel tractor with an old, weak 12 Volt battery that is getting replaced next time I go to town. It was cranking slowly so I hooked my voltmeter up to it while I was cranking the engine and it dropped down to ~6 Volts  |

The P.O. installed a 12V Battery because he didn't want to spend the money getting the 6V Starter rebuilt. As Myron said, 8V Batteries are a PIA and just a band aide. You have Peaches and Apples. Either get the Starter completely rebuilt 6V by a local pro rebuilder, or change the Tractor over to 12V. It will cost a few more bucks to do the 12V deed, but stick with one system or the other. If you stay with the 6V, have the Generator tested at the same shop to make sure that is working properly. We offer rebuilding services as well as new wiring systems if interested... With my 4 D-14s, the real 6 volt starters had a 'band' around the brushes area, 12 volt ones don't. Also.... the 'bendix' gear and the ring gear are DIFFERENT between 6v and 12v starter systems !!! ------------- 3 D-14s,A-C forklift, B-112 Kubota BX23S lil' TOOT( The Other Orange Tractor) Never burn your bridges, unless you can walk on water |
