While fitting tire chains, I noticed one axle on my CA has about 1/4” of lateral play no radial play or bearing noise. Any thoughts on the culprit? Looking at the parts manual, it seems that missing shims or the loosened capscrew could cause this play? Where do I find actual part numbers for the CA?

Remove the cap on the inside of the final drive - locate the center bolt and loosen - under the special washer there are shims.  Removing some or all of them MIGHT take out the play if there is no other issue other than 60 years of wear and tear... Tightening the capscrew will pull the axle in on the inner brg and set the rolling torque needed.

tbran is correct. I would not run until you look at it under the cap. A 1/4 inch is a lot of end play ! Hopefully the nut is just backed off and needs adjusted and locked. You may have a bearing that has failed . Is the seal leaking and is there oil in the final drive?
