have my dad's 5040 from the early to mid 80s.  When running without the PTO engaged, no whining.  When PTO engage and under load or no load, it has a high pitched whine.  Anyone experience this and if so, remedy??

welcome to forum. I don’t have any first hand experience with that model but with engine off and pto disengaged can you spin pto shaft if so does it spin freely. Maybe bearing going bad on output shaft. And have you checked oil in all those compartments.
Is it a new noise. Anything happen leading up to that point.

Can you narrow down where the noise is coming from? Under the seat or at the very back of the tractor? If you remove the square cover on the PTO support on the back you can see the rear bearing of the PTO top shaft. If you remove the cover that holds the PTO engage/disengage lever you can see the front bearing on that shaft. Probably need to move a hydraulic line or two to get the shift cover off.   One of the two bearings might be your problem since they both up above oil level and are only splash lubed.

Thanks!  Will check the free spin.  As for oil level, it seems to be leaking in multiple spots.  Will check levels and see what I find.

Thanks!  Will check these as well.  Have not had to lay a wrench on it other than routine maintenance since bought.  Just a work horse.   Will check these and advise.
