I have searched the forum reading on timing. But still having trouble. Rebuilt the engine. Had the pump rebuilt but a good diesel shop. Set my cam to crank dots when I put the engine together.(now I’m questioning if I messed that up). Had the damper rebuilt so I’m hoping it was indexed correct. Anyways go to start it and I get a bunch of smoke. But it won’t fire. Checked my timing. Damper is at 26 BTDC. Valves on one seem correct. When I ran the valves when we first put it together. There was very little adjustment needed. Timing marks in the pump window line up. First question should the timing marks in the pump window be centered? If I divided the window in thirds mine are in the bottom third. Also when I put a welding rod in the injection hole. It seems the piston is going down when my damper says TDC. Not sure if the damper may have been indexed wrong

Lots of frustration later I got it running. My freshly rebuilt damper was rebuilt wrong. When they rebuilt it, they were only around 25 degrees off on the timing marks.  talk about alot of frustration for something that shouldn't of beenAngry

This is why I check for that when putting engines together and taking them apart .With head off using a dial indicator checking top dead center on piston with balancer marks .
