The hour meter works in my 7030 but the tach doesn't.  I think this means a new tach but is there any possibility there is something that could be done to repair?  If not, is the dealer the best place get a get a new one?

Like them all, but love the "B"s.

The tach in the 7000 series  all receive an electric signal from the alternator.  Check the alternator and all the connection leading into the cab.

If the hour meter works doesn't this mean it is getting a signal?

That's kind of a good question. But, I don't think so. The tach has a positive and negative terminal on the back and I think that the positive is just key switched. With the key on, engine off, can you see the hour meter move or even hear it click?  The tach receives it's signal from the alternator and it is a variable signal so that the sweep hand corresponds to the increase in RPM from the engine. I don't believe that it has anything to do with the hour meter.

I should have asked if this tractor has a Delco or Niehoff alternator. Not that it really makes a difference. They both operate on the same principle.

Well, the hour meter does work with the switch on and motor stopped.  It has a Delco alternator.  I will try to check out a few things tomorrow when it is a little warmer.
